We were treated to a confection of delights by our speaker, Richard Furnival-Jones, at our August main meeting. Richard had worked for Harrods for 40 years first as a trainee and eventually progressing to senior management by becoming the manager and licensee of the famous Food Hall. He gave us a glimpse of the fascinating history of Harrods from its beginnings as a food shop to today’s world famous multimillion pound store. His wonderful stories of what it was like being a “Harrodian”, the traditions and ethos of the store and the strange antics of some of its wealthy customers, were very funny and sometimes very moving. Richard was a marvellous, entertaining speaker and we all felt that we could have listened to him for much longer.
