Our Committee for 2017/2018
Gill Wilkinson – Chairman
Gill had only lived in Risborough for two months when she was elected onto the committee in 2015 and after serving a year as Vice Chairman took over as Chairman in October 2016. Before moving, she was an active member of both the Arun and Bognor Regis U3As in West Sussex.
Gill’s working background was nursing and then adult care in Social Services. She has also worked for the Samaritans for 5 years and for her church. Since moving, she has worked at Princes Risborough Lighthouse and has also started working as a volunteer for Barnardos
Her interests (apart from her grandchildren) are music, the theatre, reading and cooking.
Ray Marshall – Vice Chairman
Ray is a Londoner by birth. He moved to Risborough with his wife Monica in 1971 and then to Longwick in 1978. He had a career as a financial accountant, working for Aston & Full in Mill Lane, Monks Risborough for a number of years until they moved to Wales in 2005. Ray then worked for the NHS before taking early retirement during the 2010 restructuring.
In addition to his U3A membership, Ray is a member of Princes Risborough and District Community Association (PRCA) and is a Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator for his road in Longwick. He is aalso a volunteer House Host at Waddesdon Manor, usually on a Saturday.
Jenny Robinson – Secretary
Jenny has lived in Monks Risborough for 40 years having moved here from Scotland in 1977. She is married with 2 sons and 2 grandchildren.
She has been a member of the U3A almost since its inception and enjoys taking part in the Walking, Travel, Food & Wine, Gardening and Bridge groups. Her hobbies are Walking, gardening, travel, cooking and bridge.
In a previous life Jenny graduated from Reading University with a 2:1 in History. She worked in Education both teaching and in Administration and then in Health Service Management.
Richard Jones – Treasurer and PReVIEW Editor
Richard and his wife Jill were members of Chiltern U3A before moving to Risborough in late 2013 and joining this U3A the following year. Between them, they now attend meetings of nine groups, some even together!
Richard was a science teacher in Hertfordshire for nearly forty years, principally as a chemist with a specialist interest in pyrotechnics and explosives. He was Secretary of Amersham Gardening Association for eight years.
After retiring as an Assistant Headteacher in 2007, there were various voluntary jobs: farm hand at the Chiltern Open Air Museum, database clerk for a medical charity and helper with the Riding for the Disabled Association, the last continuing to this day. Some sunny weekends, he can now be seen as a crossing keeper on the Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway or even working in the Chinnor signal box.
Richard took on his first U3A job as Editor of PReVIEW in October 2015 and has now added to his workload by becoming Treasurer as well!
John Culling – Membership Secretary
John has lived in Risborough since 1995 and has been a Risborough U3A member for the past two years, taking over as Group Leader for the Computing group. He was a Company Director working in the construction industry. He successfully completed an Open University BSc (Hons) Degree in IT and Computing, and then specialized in the creation, maintenance and development of databases.
His other interests include astronomy, obtaining the OU Certificate in Astronomy and Planetary Science this year. He also enjoys fishing and some cycling. He owns a small property in Southern Spain with his partner, Kath, and makes frequent trips there. He organises these trips around his U3A and other commitments, but is easily contactable by e-mail. He also has an OU Certificate in Spanish.
Angela Wall – Speaker Secretary
Angela has lived in Princes Risborough for 19 years and been a member of Risborough U3A for 9 years. She is the Group Leader of the Gardening group and also a member of the Walking group. In addition to gardening and walking, her interests include wildlife conservation, science, books, theatre, travel, archaeology, languages and music. Her career was in biological sciences with jobs in plant breeding research, lecturing and teaching. She currently works as a part-time tutor for the Open University. Having served on numerous committees and management teams, she is looking forward to working with fellow committee members to further progress our excellent U3A.
David Brown – Communications Co-ordinator
David and his wife Jenny moved from Welwyn Garden City to live in Monks Risborough in August 2014. Having been members of Welwyn Hatfield U3A, they were pleased to be able to continue U3A activities in Risborough. David is a member of the U3A walking, gardening, and financial groups and Jenny is a member of the walking, bridge and food and wine groups.
A qualified teacher, David’s first job was in his home town of Middlesbrough and then progressed his career with posts in Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Hertfordshire and finally Bedfordshire, where he was Principal of a further education college.
In retirement David was keen use his time to support voluntary organisations and was a trustee of Hertfordshire Society for the Blind and a Housing Association for tenants with mental health challenges.
Eleanor McGregor – Group Leaders’ Co-ordinator
Eleanor is seen mainly at the badminton and walking groups, but has attended others. She first joined U3A in Sussex a number of years ago, before moving to Risborough at the end of 2014 to be closer to her family. Her working life was spent in the NHS, now a very different place!
Leaving the old behind and starting afresh has been a positive experience due to the friendliness of U3A members
Cathy Whiteway – Social Events Organiser
Cathy has been a teacher for most of her working life, including the last 15 years at Princes Risborough School (known by many as the “top school”), where she was head of History. She has four children, but is still “grandchildren-free”. Cathy lives in Chinnor, but has joined Risborough U3A in order to play table tennis, which she is really enjoying.
Colin Robinson – General Member
Colin moved from Scotland to live in Monks Risborough in 1977.
He is married with 2 sons and 2 grandchildren. He has been a member of the U3A for many years and enjoys the Walking, Science, Travel and Bridge groups.
He is also very active in local Art groups. His main hobbies are Art, Walking Bridge and Golf.
In a previous existence Colin graduated with a PhD in High Energy Nuclear Physics. He worked for 12 years as Senior Lecturer in Physics at Glasgow University before moving into industry where he was Technical Director for a Satellite Information Systems company.
