Christmas celebrations Greek style
For the last few years the Food & Wine group have been celebrating Christmas “in house” rather than visiting a busy local restaurant in the run up to the big day. Instead of the usual British fare we prefer to explore and base our dishes on recipes from another country.
Jenny Robinson kindly agreed to organise this year’s menu and chose Greece, suggesting various recipes for members to prepare at home and bring along on the day. As usual our members did an excellent job and provided us with three courses – a choice of starters including vegetable dips and Greek salad followed by lamb with orzo, pork with celery and lemon and beef stifado as the main courses.
The joy of a ‘bring and share” buffet is that there’s nothing to stop you sampling all of them, which most of our members did! The wines also came from Greece – a red and a white both from the Peloponnese, and most of us found them surprisingly good. Soft drinks were available as an alternative and we rounded off an excellent afternoon with some sweet treats – a wonderful selection of cakes and biscuits of which snowy chocolate cookies and a rather boozy walnut cake were probably the highlights.
We pride ourselves on being a friendly group and new members are always welcome to give us a try and join us. We’ll be meeting again on 17 January when we’ll be getting the new year off to a fresh start with a look at healthy eating and sharing tips on how to make our food and drink healthier without compromising on taste.
