Food & Wine November 2015

Dessert Wines

The November meeting was shared between Elaine Brown and Geoff Heyes.  They both spoke about Dessert Wines suitable for accompanying a variety of sweet and savoury foods, inclucing  Christmas Pudding.

They described some of the production methods and the difference in the flavour of the wines and listed them as Sparkling Sweet, Lightly Sweet,  Richly Sweet, Red Sweet and Fortified.

Suggested Lightly Sweet Wines were  Gewürztraminer,  Riesling Muller Thoreau, Chenin Blanc and Viognier.

The wines we tasted were:

Sparkling:   Blanquette de Limoux (Wine Society)
Lightly Sweet:    Liebfraumilch Rheinhessen (Tesco)
Richly Sweet:    Monbazillac Domaine de Peyronnette (Lidl)
Sweet Red:    Mavradaphne of Patras (Tesco)

Foods tasted with the wines included Christmas cake, almond biscuits, red salsa and blue Stilton cheese.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, 16th December, when we will enjoy a German Buffet.  The menu looks very tempting and I am sure we will enjoy a good afternoon.

We start the New Year with members making Breads from different parts of the world.  Bread making is something the men usually excel at, so come on gentlemen surprise us with your offerings.
