Walking

Aims and Objectives

The main aim of the walking groups is obviously exercise and as we do walks ranging from 3 miles to 12 plus miles we cater for a great range of abilities.

In addition, our beautiful Chiltern Hills make walking a pleasure with beautiful woodlands and wonderful views; we also learn a little local history. Walking is a very sociable pastime and we all get to know one another  as we walk along (and in the pub afterwards!)

Members of the group are encouraged to take a turn at planning and leading a walk which helps to make them feel involved with the group as a whole.

What we do

Strollers Group 2nd Monday, 10.30am 3 miles approx

Strollers is a popular group with those who wish to walk but do not want to climb hills or walk too far. We do go quite slowly but some walks may include stiles & small inclines which are hard to avoid in our area, and sometimes mud can be a problem, especially in the winter months. Members, usually in twos, take it in turns to lead a walk having first walked it out earlier so that they know exactly where they are going.

Main Walking Group 4th Monday, 10.00am 4-6 miles

The main group walks a little further than the strollers and will probably take in some hills, though not always. The walks usually take between 2½ and 3 hours depending upon the distance and the hills, but are taken at a fairly gentle pace, especially when hills are involved. As with the strollers, members take it in turns to lead a walk, which usually includes a pub lunch afterwards.

Longer walks

On the 1st Wednesday of the month we do an all-day hike which varies in length from 9 – 12+ miles. We usually walk at least half of the walk before stopping for a pub lunch and then continue afterwards, finishing between 3 and 4 pm. On the 2nd or 3rd Friday (i.e. not in the same week as the long walk) we do a shorter walk ranging from 6-9 miles. Sometimes these walks are completed before lunch but quite often we will stop for lunch and then complete the walk afterwards. These longer walks have not generally been walked beforehand so mistakes do happen, though we’ve yet to get completely lost!
