Aims and Objectives

The Bridge Group has now been going for a few years, and provides an enjoyable afternoon of not too serious bridge. There are about fifteen active members from Risborough U3A, plus a handful from other neighbouring U3As. We can accommodate more members, and anyone who wants to give bridge a go will be most welcome, whether players with some experience or complete beginners. Some basic instruction is given, but the emphasis is on playing, rather than formal training.

What we do

The group meets in the Club Room at the Community Centre, at 2pm on the third Friday and the first Monday of each month. The room is booked until 5.30pm, and you can carry on playing until then, although most people leave earlier. There is a table money charge, which pays for room hire.

We now usually start with a brief presentation and discussion about some aspect of the game, for example the use of the Mongolian double ended switch (this doesn’t actually exist, although some people do use funny conventions). After that we get down to playing the game, normally rubber rather than duplicate bridge. There is often a discussion about some of the hands to see how a ‘better’ result might be obtained.

Between the twice-monthly sessions, some of the members get together to play in each other’s houses, with my full encouragement. When you start playing bridge you need all the practice you can get!

We usually enter a team for the U3A  Swiss Teams tournament in May, held in Hook, Hampshire.

Any member of the Risborough U3A can also visit the Chinnor bridge group on the second and fourth Thursday of each month, in the Chinnor Village Centre from 2pm to 4pm. The Chinnor group plays a version of ‘Chicago’ that uses duplicate scoring and the table money charge is £2. The organizer is Betty Yendall, 01844 351669 (alternate Stuart Baker 01844 354464). Betty has asked that anyone that wants to go should phone her beforehand to make sure that there is going to be an adequate attendance.
