At our May meeting Gordon gave a short presentation on the Amalfi coast (Costiera Amalfitana). The region was first settled in the time of the Roman Emperors Augustus and Tiberius and from the 9th Century became an important maritime trading power. In the Middle Ages Amalfi was controlled by the Principality of Salerno and experienced hard times until after the unification of Italy. Since then the Amalfi coast has enjoyed a huge economic revival, prompted by international tourism. In 1997 the region was listed as a Unesco World Heritage cultural site.
