First World War remembered
At our November meeting we remembered the home front in WW1. We learnt that rationing didn’t start until 1917 when the country had only enough food stocks to last for six weeks.. By WW2 Britain had learned this lesson. Instant custard and soup came onto the scene. We tasted some interesting recipes from WW1, thankfully not all of them in use today.
To coincide with “Go sober for October” we decided to have a look at low-alcohol drinks this month, exploring ideas on what to drink if you’re driving or just want to cut down a little. Continue reading Food & Wine – October 2018
Lunch at the Black Horse
Eighteen of our members met at the Black Horse in Thame on Wednesday, 22nd August, where they enjoyed a meal at lunch time. The menu was varied with a choice of either two or three courses. There was also an outing that day with another group which several of our members had booked for and which accounted for the low number of members at the lunch.
There will not be a meeting of the Food and Wine Group in September, but we will be back again in October where the subject will be “Mocktails”.

Lunch at Duke’s Wine Bar
For our February Meeting a group of twenty five members met at Duke’s Wine Bar where we enjoyed a social lunch together.
The Wine Bar has an extensive menu ranging from Bar Snacks and Lighter Bites to Jacket Potatoes, Sharing Boards and Hot Dishes. They also have a selection of Desserts.
This is the second time we have visited the Wine Bar and feel sure it will not be the last.
At the March meeting we will be discussing EGGS. Not just for breakfast. Maybe a few tasters will be available.
Despite the cold weather we had a good turnout for our first meeting of 2018 and were pleased to welcome a couple of new members to our group. We aimed to start the year healthily so Geoff Heyes described some tips to make our everyday, staple foods as nutritious as possible. Continue reading Food & Wine – January 2018
Christmas celebrations Greek style
For the last few years the Food & Wine group have been celebrating Christmas “in house” rather than visiting a busy local restaurant in the run up to the big day. Instead of the usual British fare we prefer to explore and base our dishes on recipes from another country.
