Copper has obviously important physical & chemical properties which render it an increasingly invaluable element for civilisation since neolithic times. The were 4 main aspects to the talk: the basics of copper, the geology & exploration, the mining & extraction, and the future of copper.
David identified many features of the formation of copper deposits as a result of volcanic action and subsequent erosion & leaching of sediments. Following exploration, the ultimate test was drilling, but only a few mining sites turn out to be economically exploitable. A burgeoning area from an economic & ecological viewpoint was the increasing use of electro-winning for extraction & recycling. It was concluded that we will never be able to do without copper!
