Simon Starling from Thames Water spoke on “How water gets to your tap”. Simon is a hydrogeologist by background, but gives community talks to interested groups. He spoke about the water cycle – how rain water is collected from rivers & ground water reserves, the purification treatments & quality testing it receives, & how it is delivered to domestic & industrial users.
He also covered how waste water is then recovered, purifed & recycled. There were increasing moves to create a sustainable urban environment, through such measures as rain gardens, water butts & permeable paving; also to make use of by-products of the purification process, e.g. fertilisers. Aquifer storage & recovery was mentioned, as well as measures to keep sewers free from “fatbergs”.
