March meeting – The work of a psychologist

Our speaker, Alan Wise, gave us an interesting insight into his work as a psychologist and psychotherapist.  He clearly explained the causes and symptoms of depression and stress,  emphasising  that acute stress was beneficial and necessary for survival but long term or chronic stress was harmful to health.  Using case studies to illustrate his points and peppering his talk with amusing anecdotes, he advised on strategies to avoid and cope with stress in our daily lives.  Alan particularly mentioned the benefits of self-care techniques such as mindfulness.
