At its pre-Christmas meeting in addition to mince pies and other festive goodies the Photography group held its annual competition. We were pleased to welcome John Minter, who is on the regional committee of the Royal Photographic Society, back as judge again this year. John provided some very useful comments on what was good and what could be improved on the photographs, as well as insights into what judges are looking for. Our past Leader, Peter, remarked on how much the standard had improved since we first started this competition some years ago.
The winning photograph was by Irene Maynard, with a beautifully composed and evocative photograph of figures on a beach including Anthony Gormley’s ‘Another Place‘ sculptures. Her reward is holding the winner’s cup for a year and a bottle of wine – but the drawback is that she has to pay to get her name engraved on the trophy! Peter Dixon took second place with a lively shot of a boy enjoying himself in the sea. And in third place was an excellent shot of a red squirrel, perfectly framed in the curves of a tree, by Chris Roberts.
Well done to everyone for taking part and bringing such a great set of photographs to the event.
