14 members watched a DVD of “Prom at the Palace”, which was made of the event staged in 2002 to make the Queen’s jubilee.The concert mainly featured the BBC Symphony Orchestra and BBC Symphony Chorus, conducted by Sir Andrew Davis.
The programme included, The Anniversary Fanfare (William Walton), the Coronation Anthum from Zadok the Priest (George Frederic Handel), Micaela’s Aria “Je dis que rien ne m’epouvante” from Carmen (Georges Bizet), “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess (George Gershwin), two spirituals “Great getting-up morning” and “Jubilee Spiritual” (arranged by Ken Burton), “Solo de Concours” (Andre Messager), “Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity” from the Planets (Gustav Holst), the “Pas de deux of the Black Swan” from Swan Lake (Tchaikovsky), “Largo al Factorum” from the Barber of Seville (Rossini), “The Yeomen of England” from Merrie England (Edward German), three dances from “the Nation’s Dances” (Malcolm Arnold), “Preludio (Modinha)” from Bachianas Brasileiras No 1 (Heitor Villa-Lopos), and “Music for the Royal fireworks (George Frederic Handel).
There were five more items on the programme, but time had run out. We agreed that we would like to see the remaining pieces of music at some later date.
